This route was created by Matt Jackson and donated to the UK Scrambles website through our contributor program. Here’s my guide to planning your trip including places to stay near Snowdon, how to get to your starting point, what to expect along the route and, finally, some recommendations of restaurants in Betws y Coed, where we stayed. Unlike Snowdon itself, which I’ll come on to in a moment, its not packed with tourists in trainers and flip flops. It was a fabulous wine and tasted a lot more expensive than £18. The approach to the start of the Crib Goch scramble usually follows the Pyg track, which can be reached from either the Pen y pas car park, or by ascending the hillside up the road from Pont y Gromlech (see map above). I was in for a treat with Welsh Pride, by far my favourite of the three beers I tried and so full of flavour. Another obvious scrambly route in this area would be to ascend the Clogwyn y person arete grade 2/3 *** possibly via the Parsons nose then reverse Crib Goch and descend the North Ridge. It is a ridge climb so there are quite severe drops on either side. I’d never been to Snowdonia before, but with just a few weeks until I’d be hiking the Spaghetti Tour in the Alps, it was time to get some practice in. Starting from Pen Y Pass car park, the hike up Crib Goch to the summit of Snowdon takes around 6-8 hours, with the full loop of the Snowdon Horseshoe taking around 8-10. However it can be a very frightening experience for children, so you would be wise to test out their reaction to less severe ridges such as Striding Edge in the Lake District, or the North Ridge of Tryfan. If it’s windy, definitely walk along the side instead of on the top. It took us past some beautiful lakes and views back of Snowdon and Crib Goch were delightful. About two thirds of the way along Crib Goch, there’s a particularly steep section, however you can easily walk around this if you wish.
